“May I ask exactly how I am “hurting” them?”
What stealing artwork also known as ‘reposting without permission’ does to the artist.
“I draw anime myself…if my art was posted somewhere, that I was not aware about, but had lots of positive encouragement… frankly I’d be extremely happy”
This is incredibly ignorant, naive, and selfish way to think. It’s also common with your art thieves who repost without permission. They spin this story as if they are somehow doing the artist a favor by taking what they’ve created without asking them first. In reality, they don’t give a damn how the artist feels.
You can tell this by how this individual is focusing on their own feelings rather than considering the feelings of the artists’ they repost without permission from.
Do you truly believe things are as simple and easy as that?
Tell me something, because I’d like to know - if what you say is true, then WHY
- do artists delete their works as soon as they discover it’s been posted on sites OTHER than the one they uploaded it on?
- do artists DELETE or CLOSE their entire account when they discover their art has been posted elsewhere without their approval?
- do artists set their THEIR ACCOUNTS to PRIVATE or MUTUALS ONLY when they see that people are reposting their artwork without having the basic human deceny to ask them if it’s ok?
- do artists put things like ‘ 無断での使用・転載等お断りいたします。’ or even in ENGLISH for people who can’t read Japanese ‘UNAUTHORIZED REPOST PROHIBITED? in their profile??
“if the original artist themselves said that they didn’t want their art here, I would remove it no problem!“
…how. How do you expect a Korean, Japanese, Chinese, or any other foreign artist WHO DOES NOT KNOW ENGLISH to even BEGIN to express that they don’t want their art posted if you don’t even try to ask them for permission? Do you realistically think that they know how to use tumblr as well as most of us can, and how to use the ask box, chat system, etc, to communicate with you? Even if they could, do you really think they expect you to know their language to understand their request for removal?
“but someone who may not even be familiar with the artist, and believes his or her ideals apply to everyone, and cares about credit more than sharing beautiful works, well I don’t know what to say to them. please don’t spread hate, and try to bring people down for sharing love. :) ”
I’m sorry, what was that last one again?
“but someone who…cares about credit more than sharing beautiful works, well I don’t know what to say to them. please don’t spread hate, and try to bring people down for sharing love. :) ”
So, let me get this straight, because this is confusing as hell.
If you care more about giving credit where credit is justly due, and you care about the feelings and rights that an artist - no, any creator - has, and you care that people be educated about this whole matter of being a basic decent person by asking permission (something that you should’ve learned from way back in kindergarten), you’re spreading hate and trying to bring people down??
Let’s back up.
“but someone who may not even be familiar with the artist, and believes his or her ideals apply to everyone
You don’t need to be familiar with an artist to respect what they do and support them. Also, this isn’t an ‘ideal’ - this is common courtesy. No one can force you to ask the artist for permission, but guess what?
Tumblr has this magical thing known as the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. To make it simple, it is a law that protects intellectual property from unauthorized use. Yes, that includes fanarts, even little scribbly doodles. And it’s not hard to find where an artwork that’s reposted nowadays with useful search engines like saucenao, just like how it isn’t difficult to report to an artist on twitter and pixiv that someone on tumblr reposted their artwork.
And if they give the authority for the reporter to be their representative to contact tumblr to remove the reposted artwork? Then the result is that tumblr will give your blog a strike. Earn 3 strikes, and tumblr deletes your account.

I’m glad you show concern for these talented people, but may I ask exactly how I am “hurting” them? I am not saying demeaning things about their art, I did not remove their signatures/watermarks. These pictures I all got from Google and or Instagram and I wanted to share them with the people here because I thought they were amazing and because I loved what they drew. I draw anime myself, and although i can definitely say I’m no where close to what these people can do, if my art was posted somewhere, that I was not aware about, but had lots of positive encouragement, and did not have my signature removed or anything, and the poster/blogger did not claim the drawings, frankly I’d be extremely happy. then again, I can’t speak for others, but the same applies to you. if the original artist themselves said that they didn’t want their art here, I would remove it no problem! but someone who may not even be familiar with the artist, and believes his or her ideals apply to everyone, and cares about credit more than sharing beautiful works, well I don’t know what to say to them. please don’t spread hate, and try to bring people down for sharing love. :)
“…we use a three-strike system to evaluate the standing of a user’s account, where, generally, each valid copyright infringement notice constitutes a strike, and three strikes results in the termination of a user’s account.”
More over, the more fanart that you post without permission, the higher chances you have of being made a spectacle and labeled as an art thief, which is not very flattering, to say the least.
